|
|
I just installed emerge desktop a week ago, and although I have loved it so far, I have been unable to successfully get the computer to read my Zune when it's connected. When I connect it, "installing device drivers" pops up, but it never successfully installs them, and when I look on my computer, the Zune does not show that it's connected. The Zune software also doesn't show that the Zune is connected. I have changed my desktop back to explorer for now, because the Zune does work on there, but I would rather use emerge if I could get this problem resolved.
Also, and this is unrelated, the volume and player buttons on my computer don't work with emerge. I have and HP dv9000 laptop, which has volume controls directly above the keyboard. These work fine when I use explorer.
Another problem I've had with emerge is that the scroll on the side of my mouse pad doesn't work with emerge, and again this works on explorer.
I would be grateful for any solutions, because I loved using emerge for the past week and would like to go back to using if if I could get these resolved.
Thanks!! |

To make your VolumeUp and VolumeDown working, you probably need to set it up in emergeHotKey.
About touchpad and zune. Check your autorun tasks, it is probably not loaded in startup. |

The volume/pause/play buttons I'm referring to are not part of the keyboard, they are above them, so while I could add volume control to hotkeys, the ones that are already on my computer are more convenient for me to use.
I did try adding the Zune and touchpad (which is Synaptic) to the autorun tasks, but that did not help for either one. The Zune knows that it's connected, because it charges, but it does not come up on my computer.
Any other ideas? Please and thank you. |

You should be able to get the volume keys working with emergeHotkeys and the VolumeUp/VolumeDown Internal Commands associated to the VolumeUp/VolumeDown keys.
The Zune player must be working perfectly. What happens is that Emerge Desktop does not autoplay any drive (which IMO is an excellent feature, not a limitation...)
You can simply open the drive from My Computer (or your favourite File Manager) or... if your Zune device is always assigned the same drive letter, just set a hotkey to start the program that is executed by the autorun file _________________

I guess I must not have made this very clear when I asked the question. My Zune does not show up under My Computer. When I plug it in, a window pops up to say that it has installed the device software, and the Zune shows up when I go to Device Manager, but it does not show up in My Computer, nor does the Zune player software show that a Zune is connected.
As for the volume buttons, the ones on my laptop are not part of the keyboard, so using emerge hotkeys doesn't work for them. I have added hotkeys that will change the volume, I just don't find them as convenient as the ones integrated onto the laptop. If anyone knows this type of laptop (HP dv9000), there's a "quick play" bar above the keyboard that has play/pause/mute/volume keys, which I tend to use automatically, even with the hotkeys I've put on here.
I hope this clears up my problem a little bit, but thanks for the advice anyway. |

I googled a bit and find out that Microsoft being Microsoft, did even worse with the Zune than Apple did to the iPod.
They created a proprietary software that is the only one allowed to work with the Zune hardware (unless you use ZAleternator, which I'm not sure is the same thing).
So I'm not surprised that it doesn't work under eD. It must be one of those programs (like the Windows 7 sidebar) where Microsoft created a new rule only they know...
I doubt there is a workaround without creating specific code... ironhead?
Regarding the Volume keys, if you have tried assigning Volume Down to the VolumeDown key and that did nothing then your keyboard must be using a different scancode (see this topic http://www.emergedesktop.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=437) _________________

By fiddling around with it, I got my Zune to sync correctly, so yay for that. I also got my touchpad to work by fiddling around with it, so another yay.
As for the volume keys, I'll be fine using the hotkeys I've assigned. I've gotten used to them the past few days and will miss the quickplay bar only occasionally.
I guess that basically resolves these few problems, which I think were mostly just compatibility issues. I will continue to happily use emerge. Thanks everyone! |

I think something is getting lost in translation, so to speak. Although the volume keys are above your keyboard, technically they still are keys and are technically still part of the keyboard -- just not part of the physical main keyboard. If you press them to make them do something they are keys, doesn't matter where they are located! Make sense? Therefore you will be able to assign VolumeUp and VolumeDown to these keys.
I own an HP 9420 laptop which has the separate volume key controls above the keyboard and it took some figuring out to get the right key scans to assign to these keys in order to get my volume control to work but it can be done. If you follow the link provided by MeToo to a posting which has a link to scankey a util to figure out your keycodes that you can then map. |
